Origin of Herman's Hermits

Sherman's Hermits?

I am frequently asked...

"Where did you get the name Herman?"

In a pub in Manchester England rehearsed a group of friends.

They were searching for the right name for their new style of music.

They wanted a name that was totally unique, and did not conjure up visions of pop stars and teen heart throbs.

We dropped the 'bloody' and Herman and the Hermits were born.

The 6 people present were Alan Wrigley, Allan Chadwick, Steve Titterington, Karl Green, Keith Hopwood, and the owner of the pub we were rehearsing in.

Alan Wrigley and Steve Titterington remarked how when I wore the "Buddy Holly glasses", I looked more like the bloke from the Bullwinkle Show, than our rock and roll hero Buddy.

"What was his name?

Hubert, Horace?

Herman!!!

What name would go with Herman? (Actually the name we were searching for was Sherman, but it was a new TV series in England).

The owner of the pub we were rehearsing in said "Call yourself Herman and The Bloody Hermits". You all look like bloody Hermits.

We dropped the 'bloody' and Herman and the Hermits were born.

I loved the songs in the ‘60’s and love them today. I’m now 75 years old, still in love with the woman who divorced me, fought in Vietnam, and experienced to absolute best and worst that human beings can give to one another.

My daughter, Kimberly, and I just saw the show at the Meyer Theatre in Green Bay, WI. We loved it! For me, it was a walk down memory lane. For my daughter, she didn’t know most of the music, but still had fun. I was hoping to find a brief biography about each member of the band today. In the future, perhaps you can add that information and pictures to the official Herman’s Hermits website.

My first memory of Herman’s Hermits was watching the Ed Sullivan Show. That rendition of “Henry the Eighth” was performed in warp speed. I don’t think it was ever done any faster than that night.I love hearing all the stories and the Facebook Live interaction. Thank you for sharing you and your talents with all the world. 🎶❤️❗

I have been following this group since the 60’s and I can remember when the original artist were all together. Yeah it’s not the same now as it were then but just as good. We went to see them 10 years ago or so here in our small town in a small theater. It was up front and personal and we loved the show would go see them again if they came to town. I do have an autographed poster that I will never sell, it will be handed down to one in the family who appreciates music as much as I do since I am a musician myself.
