The Hermits let loose, really let themselves go under certain circumstances -
just like these!
WHAT'S the one time you can remember when you had the most fun? When you acted kind-of wacky, kind-of happily-insane, really had your-self a ball? Lek, Keith, Barry, Karl and Herman can remember times they've felt like that. And you're going to hear about them-when they happened and how they happened-right now!
LEK LECKENBY - Lek confided, "The most swinging time I can remember is the time I had one of my fondest dreams come true. Not only was it a proud moment for me -it was a pretty happy one, too." You see, although Lek is a fantastic guitarist, he's always wanted to play the drums. As a matter of fact, he's wanted to play the drums in public - just once! "It always looked like such fun," Lek said. "And besides, since I'm a pretty musical person, I felt I should know how to play them . . . and practice at it, too."
Lek got his chance at a party a public relations agency gave for the boys. To tell the truth, the party was pretty dull. Sure, there were loads of people milling around, but the talk was getting stale. People were just sort-of looking at each other and not doing much of anything else.
Then somebody suggested they have some music. Instruments were pulled out of some closet and set up. The Hermits were "pressed into service," as well as some other musicians who were at the party. And the fun began.
Lek told us, "I don't know how it happened exactly, but I found myself at the drums. And before I knew it, I was pounding away, clanging at the cymbals, beating everything in sight!" He smiled as he remembered it. "Let me tell you, that was some night. Really, I had the best time of my life! I was doing something I really wanted to do - I guess that's the important thing. And I had the most fun doing it!"
Was Lek any good? He was good enough, gang, good enough. In fact, we might go so far as to say that on the drums, as well as the guitar, Lek's a real swinger!
KEITH HOPWOOD - Usually, you'd think of Keith as the quiet one, the one with a lot on his mind and a shy smile on his face. You might never think, in fact, he could be a real swinger, go out and "cut up" like mad! Well, you're wrong. He can . . . and he did!
Keith told us, "England is famous for its carnivals, you know. Really, as elegant as the British people are supposed to be, they really let loose when they're at a fair or a carnival or at some other kind of public celebration. Anyway, I went to a carnival out in the country, not far from my home, recently. And to put it bluntly, I had a rather exciting time of it!"
That's putting it mildly, rather than bluntly, we think. 'Cause Keith not only had a rather exciting time," he caused most of the excitement!
To begin with, he was recognized. And before he could say, "Wheee, let's have fun," he was playing Pied Piper to about thirty teenage gals who wanted nothing better than to be close to him and follow him around the whole live - long day! Keith said, "I thought it was practically my duty to amuse them a bit. After all, they're fans . . . and I love them all! So I led them around, like in a parade. And we had fun, that's for certain!"
That is for certain. They ate (not all together, of course), they went on the rides (not all together, of course), they laughed, talked, giggled, ran around -and had the time of their lives!
Keith confided, "I'm sure some of those girls, at least, thought they were having the most fun. But I know I was. In fact, I don't think I've enjoyed myself so much in a long time. Maybe I'll do it again real soon."
BARRY WHITWAM - Barry, in case you didn't know, is an avid boating enthusiast. Whenever he has the chance, he heads for "the open lake" for a few hours of quiet drifting or hectic maneuvering 'round and about on the water. Barry said, "Usually, I'm a sail-boat man . . . a 'pure' boater. I don't normally go in for speed-boats or power-driven crafts. But the time I'm going to tell you about, I was power-driven-in more ways than one!"
Seems Barry was invited to spend a weekend at a friend's home, situated on a beautiful lake with trees all around it, really a lovely place. He went, according to Barry, to rest up a little and sort-of take it easy. And this he did-the first day. But on Saturday night, things changed.
"We decided to have sort-of a lake party," Barry said. "My friend had a speed-boat, deck chairs, the whole works. So he invited some friends of his to join us. The plan was to have a good time, but quietly."
Barry, however, was feeling particularly chipper that night. Somehow or other, the

country air and the smell of the water and trees perked him up. In fact, he was just about bursting with peppiness!
"The second I got out on that boat," he said, "I wanted to take over the wheel. And I took over, all right. I whizzed around that lake like a typhoon! I mean, I was really going!"
Since everyone had a bathing suit on, they thought nothing of being splashed by the big waves Barry was making with his sharp turns and "water acrobatics!" And he was making them, you can bet on that. It was as if the boat was as full of energy as Barry was!
"It was quite a party," Barry smiled and said. "Everyone was having fun especially me! I don't want to brag or anything, but I have to admit I was the life of that particular party. At least, I was the one who kept the party jumping (or rather, splashing!). I really can't say when I enjoyed myself more!"
We hope the other people at that party (and especially the ones who hadn't meant to go swimming) feel the same way!
KARL GREEN - It's no secret that Karl likes girls. And you'd think the nights he swings the most are those when he's surrounded by thousands of the prettiest girls around. But that isn't exactly the truth. Sure, most of his dates are sort-of wild, with lots of cutting-up and clowning around. But it's just this fact that makes Karl enjoy the quiet ones even better!
Karl told us, "The nights when I'm alone with a girl are my happiest. No hooping, no hollering, no fooling around. Just the girl and me alone together to enjoy each other's company. That's when I really enjoy myself to the fullest!"
For example, there was one particular night (and one particular girl) that made Karl the closest thing to Romeo since Romeo himself! The girl? Well, she was sort-of petite, with straight, dark hair she wore just to the shoulders. She wasn't in show business, but she could have been. She was that pretty!
Karl confided, "I thought it would be nice to spend a rather quiet evening. You know, dinner out, then a nice walk home, then some record-listening and talking. She was the kind of girl who'd enjoy that kind of date sort-of deep and thoughtful. And personally," he smiled, "I wanted to be alone with her, to get to know her very well."
Make no mistake about it, that's just what Karl did. At the restaurant, they huddled close together over their thick steaks and creamed potatoes. During their walk back to the girl's house, they held hands and whispered, their heads almost touching during certain times. And while listening to records, they sat close together on a big over-stuffed couch and talked quietly about themselves, about one another.
Karl said, "It was a wonderful evening. I can't say it was heaps of fun or anything like that, because I didn't have the fun-kind of enjoyment, if you know what I mean. But I did have the kind of evening I enjoy most-the kind I'm really my best at. And that's something, isn't it?"
PETER NOONE (HERMAN) - "The most swinging night I can remember," Herman told us, "was the night we celebrated when 'I'm Into Something Good' reached Number 1. That was some night complete with champagne, all the people who'd helped us get to the top, our families, our friends, everyone who mattered. It sure was some night!"
That's not the half of it! Herman was so thrilled that the groups' first record went right smack to the top of the heap, he was almost delirious with joy! Without actually knowing what he was doing (or why) he managed to consume uncountable glasses filled to the brim with "bubbly."
Herman said, "I was drunk-partly from what I'd been drinking, partly from happiness. I danced around, I sang, I tickled people, I staggered, I giggled, I did so many out-of-my-mind things, I'm even embarrassed to remember them myself! But I did them. I was just so happy, I couldn't stand it!"
Oh, it was a wild celebration. People were hugging and kissing other people. Millions of hands were shook and backs were slapped. Everyone was smiling, happy, full of life and love - especially Herman!
He didn't find out till later, after the party, that he hadn't been drinking champagne at all, though. He'd actually been drinking colored water! So his drunkenness wasn't at all from his choice of beverage.
It was all happiness and nothing but! Herman laughed and said, "I was mortified when the truth came out about the colored water. I mean, there I'd been, acting the complete fool-and I hadn't even had a drop of alcohol! But in a way, I was glad about it, too. I'd had such a good celebration. I'd really let myself go! And I'll do it again the next time around!"
Remind us to be there when it happens, Herm!
