What makes The Hermits quake and shake? What makes them Sigh
and cry? You'll know what - everything everything they have to tell is told!

DO you want to know what makes a Hermit afraid? Well, you've come to the right place!-Cause we know-and soon, so will you!
When we spoke to The Hermits recently we asked them one special question: What one thing makes you so afraid that it sometimes brings tears? The answers the boys gave were all very revealing. In fact, some of them were downright surprising! But they'll give you a better peek at what really makes your fav guys tick. We won't keep you in suspense any longer-here goes:
KEITH HOPWOOD
"My big fear," said Keith rather seriously, "has to do with my mad passion for buttons!" In case you didn't know, Keith is a "button-hound." He loves odd and unusual buttons and has quite a large collection. Keith went on to explain his fear. I know one day I'll see a perfect stranger wearing a coat or a dress or a sweater with a button I must have for my collection! I'm afraid I just might lose control, run right over and yank it off! Boy, what a fix I'd be in then!" But what about the tears, you ask? Here's what Keith had to say about them. "When I was a small boy, my 'passion' got the better of me and I pulled the pearl buttons off my mother's favorite dress. Needless to say, I got a whopping beating-and you should've seen the tears flow then!" Something tells us, Keith's going to keep that boyhood "tanning" in mind, before he decided to pull any more buttons off people's clothing!
LEK LEKENBY
Lek's big fear has to do with the technical aspect of being a Hermit. And it's a fear that makes him very nervous. "Before we perform," said Lek,"I have to make sure that all the electrical equipment is in A-1 working order. And that's a big responsibility!" Guitarist Lek is a perfectionist in every sense of the word. And even after the equipment passes his rigid tests, he still worries. I'm always afraid that something is going to go wrong with the equipment once we're on stage," he confessed. "The thought is always in my mind when we're performing," Lek went on, "and sometimes I get so nervous, I feel like crying! But that wouldn't look too good, would it?" Lek has reason to be afraid. Once, The Hermits were giving a concert, and Lek's amplifier "conked out" right in the middle of a song. None of the fans noticed it, but Lek certainly did! In itself, the incident wasn't a catastrophe," Lek explained. The amplifier was fixed before the next song. But I guess I take everything a bit too seriously. Anyway, lying in bed that night, I was practically on the verge of tears!" The next time you feel like crying, Lek, we know about fifty-million girls who'd be willing to lend you their shoulders!
BARRY WITWAM
Barry's favorite hobby is boating. Barry's biggest fear is the ocean! Now, how do you figure that out? It's easy "I always loved sailing," explained Barry, "ever since I was little. But once, when I was about twelve years old,
I'd gone boating with some friends. The boat capsized and all of us toppled into the briny!" As Barry tells it, he wasn't able to swim as well as his friends and became frightened. So, when they finally fished him out of the water, he was so "shook up," he began to sob hysterically. I was more afraid of the fact that I almost drowned, than I was about being stranded with a capsized boat!" Ever since that time, Barry's been a bit afraid of large bodies of water. But the incident did teach him something. "I made up my mind I'd better learn how to swim well, if I ever wanted to go sailing again. So I did. I wasn't going to take any chances! But even today, I wear a life jacket whenever I step into a boat-just to be on the safe side!" You can't be too safe, Barry! We couldn't stand to lose The Hermit's favorite drummer!
KARL GREEN
"Girls are the cause of my biggest fear," Karl confessed. "And it gets worse every day!" Known as the "lady-killer" to the rest of his buddies, Karl loves girls more than anything else in the world! "That's what's wrong," he said. "I love to date and usually go out every chance I get That means rushing around on business during the day, recording and photo sessions, press conferences, concerts at night and then out till the wee hours dancing with an adorable 'bird'! That leaves very little time for a good nourishing meal!" Poor Karl! His hectic schedule is making him lose weight! "I'm not worried about that," he said, assuringly. "I'm just afraid all this hurried living will get to me. Then I might become too weak even to hold a girl's hand! That's when you'll see a real flood of tears-if I have the energy left for even that!" It's a bet we'll never see the day when Karl won't have enough energy to flirt with a girl. NOTHING could ever do that to him . . . not even The Hermits' harried schedule!
HERMAN
"If you want to see a grown boy cry," said Herman, "just let a spider come near me!" For some reason, I've always been deathly afraid of them!" But once we got Herman thinking about his fear, he told us how he thought it all started. "As a boy," he recalled, "I can remember going to one of those ghastly horror movies that Keith loves so much. This one in particular was about a giant spider that terrorized the city, devouring everything in its path!" That movie was enough to put a scare into Herm that has lasted to this day. "When I came home from the movie," Herm went on' "I was actually shaking with fright! I remember crying bitterly, as I told my parents about it! From that day on, I panic whenever I see a spider!" Herm told us that his mates love to tease him about his fear. As a matter of fact, Karl enjoys sneaking up behind him, grabbing him around the neck, and saying something like, "I am the giant spider-and I've come to eat you up!" "Whenever that happens," Herm admitted, "I let. out such a big yell, it could scare even the most gigantic spider!"
