Peter Noone (Herman, of Herman's Hermits): My big problem as a kid was my shyness. I still am quite shy and I avoid contact with strangers as much as I can, but I've learned to hide it as much as possible. I have to hide it in my work. I was real tall and thin as a kid and my teeth were slightly out of line. My appearance made me very self-conscious and whenever anyone spoke to me, my face turned beet red with embarrassment. As soon as I started performing with the Hermits I gained confidence because I believed my group was good. On stage, I manage to cover up my shyness so well that people have told me that I give a cheeky, brash air when I sing. I'm glad that I've managed to wipe out my shyness onstage. But I still have difficulties when it comes to meeting people off-stage away from the concerts and recording sessions. I hope in time that will also disappear. |
