ONE OF THE GAMES the insies play around the recording studios and booking offices, the TV stations and movie studios - wherever show folks gather - is second guessing whether fame will ruin not Rock Hunter, but Peter Herman Head Hermit Noone. What they all seem to overlook is a basic fact of human nature they slept through in Psych I - an enduring sense of humor will overbalance a straying ego every time. At a time when most guys are nowhere in the career world and have to borrow to go on a five-buck date, Herman has held the top an amazingly long time in an era of quick-switching tastes. Explaining it starts to get a little complicated but Herman is proud that he is not a complicated person. The smile that has crippled a million female hearts is simplicity itself. One way is to horse around with his phone calls. He likes to grab the phone, disguise his voice and start right off with things like, "Ho-kay, whatta size-a pizza you wanna-hub-cap or manhold cover." No matter what the party blubbers in astonishment at the other end, he's likely to come back real quick with, "You betcha we gotta licorice-a pizza, don't-huh everybody-a?" Herman is so hooked on humor that he gets as big a kick when a joke is played on him as when he plays a joke on someone else. One of his biggest howls when he was on the coast was one day he wandered into a clothing store and went up to a man he thought was a clerk. The guy who helped him and went on helping him, even to trying on things to show how they looked, turned out to be Roger Miller. For him, life isn't all the Hermits. He is probably more a fan of other groups and artists than any of HIS fans are dedicated to HIM. All his personal involvement in the teen music world has made him a very shrewd analyst. All this observation, too, helps him make sure the Hermits don't get misled down any unnecessary twists and turns that might prove harmful to their careers. Peter Noone lives the life of Herman 24 hours a day and his sense of humor about it all keeps it from being exhausting. Herman is making sure he keeps his eyes and his interests focussed to learn about geography and human nature and, most of all, the state of humor in this sometimes too grim world. It's Peter Noone's ace in the hole. |
