IT WASN'T EXACTLY an ordinary wedding with Mum weeping and the chief bridesmaid going off with the best man, when Herman married Mireille Strasser at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Farm Street, London, W1, last Tuesday. CAMERA BULBS popped, newspaper reporters scribbled and nattered, babies cried, Herman looked very flushed and Mireille looked very regal. THE RAIN stopped long enough for the sun to come out for a final burst, Mireille, in short white dress and matching cloak, her headdress a mass of white feathers and ribbons, sat on the left of the aisle. HERMAN, in dark Regency suit, sat on the right next to his best man record producer Mickie Most. Mireille's elder sister, blonde and elegant, her hair done in one thick plait, was the only bridesmaid. THE COUPLE exchanged plain gold rings - the Catholic ceremony was shortened and altered slightly because the French-born Mireille is Jewish. TWO OFFICIAL cameramen dodged about the altar taking pictures of the occasion. |
MIREILLE was given away by her banker father Monsieur O. Strasser, and Herman's mother's huge blue feathered hat shook slightly. THEN IT was all over. Coming back up the aisle Mickie Most said hello to friends and the party was driven off to their reception in a black Rolls-Royce. THE RECEPTION at Les Ambassadeurs in Park Lane was attended by over 300 people, mainly family and friends. Herman's Hermits and their wives were there. CHAMPAGNE CORKS popped. More photographs were taken. CHRIS FARLOWE yelled for food - and was rewarded with hot sausages and prawns in sauce. Madeline Bell and Billie Davis got in a huddle in a corner. A gentleman on the Bride's side stormed around smiling and looking handsomely evil behind a black eye patch - later revealed to be a high ranking Israeli sea commander. THE BEAUTIFUL three-tiered wedding cake was cut amidst rousing choruses of "Happy Birthday" - it was Herman's 21st that very day - "Congratulations" and "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow." |
