HERMAN has a very positive, sometimes alarming sense of humour. His girl needs to have strong nerves, and to be just one degree potty!
She may be having dinner with Herman in some fashionable restaurant, when he would leap to his feet, and rush from the building, yelling, "Fire in the kitchen!" There wouldn't be, of course, but Herman would have raced down the road on his enormously long legs, leaving you to face the music.
Herman likes going for long walks at night, wherever he is. He likes dancing, and talking and being among other young people.
He is very difficult to know really well, despite an open friendliness when you first meet him. Once Herman trusts you, he regards you as a friend forever, but if you let him down, he will never forgive you. So his girl needs to be very reliable. He believes in family unity. He absolutely adores his baby sister Suzanne, who calls him Herbert.
He is very young in lots of ways. Once we were waiting for a taxi, and I looked down, and saw Herman had all his fingers crossed! "It's O.K. we'll get a taxi soon," he said. If you like Herman as he is, you'd have to be ready for him to change, because America is changing him. With each visit he grows up a little more.
Are you reliable? Would you stick by him, resisting all temptations? Could you be relied upon to keep silent about his personal business affairs, even if asked about them by someone you thought he trusted? He would expect this of the girl in his life - could you measure up to these questions and be his sort of girl?
